Welcome to the holmes m.S. music department!!
Classroom News:
Dear 8th Grade Band and Orchestra Parents:
I am pleased to invite the Holmes 8th grade band to perform with the Stevenson High School Marching Band at the home football game scheduled for Friday, September 29th. This event will give 8th graders a chance to experience marching band before marching band registration in June. I believe marching band is one of the best ways to ensure a smooth transition between middle school and high school because strong friendships are formed weeks before the first daunting day of high school classes!
Below is information you will need for this event. The time commitment involves one evening practice and one evening performance.
For the rehearsal: Wednesday, September 27th (5:00-8:00p at SHS):
1. While most of the music and marching will be learned during the regular 8th grade band class, there will be one evening rehearsal with the Spartan Marching Band. The date for this rehearsal is Wednesday, September 27th, from 5:00-8p at SHS. Students will drop off instrument cases in the band room and then meet on the marching band practice field in front of the school. Practice will start promptly at 5:00, at which time we take a few moments to get kids into “block band” and then march to the stadium. You are welcome to watch this rehearsal from the bleachers.
2. Students will borrow a music flipbook and lyre from Mrs. Kilgore.
For the performance: Friday, September 29th at 6:45p
1. Students are asked to arrive at SHS at 5:30p for a run-through. Cases should be dropped off in the band room.
2. For the performance, students will be asked to wear blue jeans, a white shirt (or sweatshirt), and tennis shoes. You do not have to purchase anything special. It is strongly recommended that students bring a
sweatshirt or coat with them to the field. The game weather typically starts out warm, and cools down quickly
after the sun goes down.
3. The students will march out to the field together and perform for pre-game at 6:35p. You will want to make sure you are seated before then to get a good view of the field. If you want to sit near the band in the stands, the marching band sits at the near end of the bleachers (closest to the parking lot).
4. For the first half of the game, the students will sit in the stands with the Spartan Marching Band to perform stadium chants and music. During this time, students are asked to remain with the band. They are not allowed to visit concessions, parents, or the restroom so they must plan accordingly. However, parents are welcome to visit students. At half-time the 8th graders will remain in the stands to watch the Spartans perform their complete half-time show.
5. For the second half of the game the Spartan Marching Band continues to play stadium music in the stands. The 8th graders are encouraged to stay until the end of the game to march back to Stevenson. . However, if you choose to leave early, students may go home after the half-time show as long as they check out with Mrs. Kilgore. Note: seventh grade musicians have their HMS activity night, beginning at 7:30.
These students may leave directly after pre-game if they wish to go to the activity night at Holmes.
Or, they are welcome to stay for the entire game.
If your child will be leaving early, do not have your child bring the instrument case into the bandroom.
Leave the instrument case in the car instead. the band room will be locked up for the duration of the
game..
6. Admission to the football game is $5.00 for parents; students marching in the band are free.
I am excited for this very special evening and hope you are, too. If you have any questions about this performance, please direct them to Mrs. Kilgore at pkilgore@livoniapublicschools.org or myself at hwickman@livoniapublicschools.org.
Sincerely,
Heather Wickman
